Fragment Media Group has acquired one5c, a leading environmental publication founded by Joe Brown in 2021, the company announced today. Brown will continue to lead one5c as its publisher and additionally joins Fragment Media Group’s VP, Climate.
Brown, the award-winning former editor-in-chief of Popular Science and Executive Editor of WIRED, had previously established himself as a leading voice in environmental journalism. He founded one5c because he saw an opportunity to speak to readers who were not served by the existing body of climate-focused outlets.
“one5c was the first environmental publication to move beyond stoking fear and use storytelling to inspire action,” said Brown. “Every piece centers around something you can do that will make an actual difference; readers immediately understand the power they have to effect change.”
Fragment Media Group CEO Nicholas White is excited to support what Brown has fostered. “Joe has built a powerful and passionate community around nothing less than saving the world,” he said.
one5c covers how optimism and individual action can help solve the climate crisis, which fits in perfectly with Fragment’s expertise in empowering audiences. “The minute you read one of his newsletters, you’re all-in—not just because of the writing, but because it shows you how to be part of the solution to the greatest crisis humanity has ever faced,” said White.
By joining Fragment, one5c readers’ impact will increase. “This is not a typical media company,” said Brown. “Every product, every workflow, every conversation focuses on serving its audiences, and that emphasis is only increasing. It’s the perfect home for one5c.”
Over the coming months, Brown, who will stay on as publisher and editorial director, will collaborate with the Fragment team to expand one5c from a popular Substack to a full-fledged, multiplatform publication. And as the media industry’s first VP of Climate, Brown will also help the company continue to be a climate innovator.
“We’ve been quietly serious about environmental stewardship for more than a decade, but bringing Joe on board will help us level up,” said White. “And adding one5c to our stable of high-impact publications including Nautilus and Nautilus Ocean puts our literal money where our mouth is.”
